Things to Do in Kona in October

Coastal view of Kona with boats, palm trees, and mountains under sunny skies.

If you’re mapping out things to do in Kona in October, you’re planning your trip during one of the better stretches of the year on this coast. The water is still warm, the summer crowds have thinned out, and the island’s biggest annual event returns to town. At Sea Quest Hawaii, we’ve spent over 35 years on the South Kona Coast, and October ranks among our favorite months to be out on the water with guests.

This guide covers what makes October worth planning around, what’s happening on land that week, and where to spend your time in the ocean while you’re here.

Why October Is a Great Month for Things to Do in Kona

Kona’s prime snorkeling season runs from April through October, and this month sits right at the tail end of it. That means you still get warm water and strong visibility, but without the peak summer traffic on the roads or in the harbor.

Mornings tend to stay calm along the leeward coast, which is exactly the kind of ocean condition you want for a comfortable day of snorkeling. If you’ve been putting off a trip because you assumed summer was the only good window, October deserves a second look.

Watch the Ironman World Championship Return to Kona This October

If you’re in Kona in October, you might find yourself sharing the town with some of the fittest athletes on the planet. The 2026 Ironman World Championship takes place in Kailua-Kona on October 10.

This year’s race brings something back that hasn’t happened since 2019. Both the professional men’s and women’s fields will compete in Kona on the same day, after years of the event splitting the two races between different host cities.

Even if you’re not there to watch the finish line, the energy around town during race week is hard to miss. Streets fill with athletes training on their bikes, spectators line Ali’i Drive, and the whole town leans into it. If your trip lands near that date, plan around road closures downtown, but don’t skip the chance to see it firsthand.

The Night Manta Ray Snorkel in October

Warm evening water makes October a strong month for our Night Manta Ray Snorkel. You’ll head out after dark, hold onto an illuminated float, and watch as manta rays glide beneath you while they feed on plankton drawn in by the light.

It’s one of the only places on earth you can do this, and the mild October evenings make the whole experience more comfortable from the moment you enter the water to the ride back.

Daytime Snorkel Tours at Kealakekua Bay and South Kona

If you’d rather explore in daylight, our South Kona Snorkel Expedition and Captain Cook Snorkeling Tour both take you into Kealakekua Bay, one of the most respected snorkel destinations in Hawaii. Depending on your tour, you’ll also pass sea caves and lava tubes carved into the coastline.

These tours give you a full look at what South Kona has to offer without needing multiple days on the water to see it.

Ocean Conditions and Marine Life to Expect in Kona in October

October sits just before Hawaii’s winter swell season picks up, so you’re still getting some of the calmest water of the year. That matters if you or someone in your group is newer to snorkeling.

Expect to see Hawaiian green sea turtles moving through the reef, and keep an eye out for spinner dolphins passing through open water. Conditions like these are part of why so many visitors build their things to do in Kona in October around a boat trip rather than shore access alone.

Planning Your October Trip to Kona
